What do restoring degraded soil and recovering from burnout have in common?

More than you might think. Both soil and people can transform and flourish when the right tools and approaches are applied.

🌍 The Soil Challenge: Hot, dry soil struggles to absorb water – despite the urgent need, even rain can’t penetrate. The Crisis: One-third of the world’s soil is degraded.

💔 The People Parallel: When in burnout, we struggle to absorb love, pushing away the very care and connection they so desperately need. The Crisis: Over 50% of people on a global scale report experiencing burnout.

🌱 The Soil Solution: Organisations like Just Digg It have been regenerating degraded land in Africa for over15 years. Through the creation of ‘Earth Smiles’ in the soil  (semi-circle bunds), they encourage the pooling of rainwater, this act of care increases water absorption, restores biodiversity, and revives ecosystems. Within a few years, life flourishes again in once hard, parched land.

The People Solution: Burnout recovery can mirror this process. It is possible through what I like to think of as ‘Coaching Smiles’, well-held coaching spaces, within which experienced coaches provide just enough digging, seeding and watering, to support the absorption of love, allowing for the discovery of new ways forward and nurturing of self-compassion. With time, energy returns, and people flourish again.

These parallels occurred to me when watching Planet Wild's Earth Smiles video.

As part of the Balanceology Hub's December Community Connect call, we explored how we as coaches and changemakers can absorb more love, in order to replenish ourselves and continue to reignite human flourishing through the work we do in the world.

We recognised that digging hard soil isn’t easy. It takes effort, dedication, compassion and ourselves learning to receive, not just to give love. Many of us identified with being much more easily able to give than to receive and we explored some of what has contributed to that, contemplating how we might gently open ourselves more and more to allowing love to soak in and restore us.

💡 A Reminder for Changemakers: Your work matters. It makes a difference. And even when it feels like progress is slow or hope wavers, remember: transformation - whether for soil or souls - takes time.

Whenever you may have a wobble (as we all certainly do), or need a place to down your tools, connect and replenish your own inner smile, or want to be in the presence of other like minded people, or celebrate what’s going well, come on into the Balanceology Hub – we’ve got you.  Monthly community calls, supervision, mentoring, meditations and more…. ALL coaches and changemakers welcome.

Keep letting love in and carving out smiles - because the world needs every act of care that you bring (including the acts of care for yourself that model the way for others)🌱
